About the 5T Rough Terrain Forklift (2WD)
The 5T 2WD rough terrain forklift is the heaviest-capacity RT in the standard two-wheel drive hire range. At a 5,000 kg rated lift capacity and a 5.5m maximum lift height, it covers the load class where a 3.5T RT runs out of safe headroom — large precast concrete elements, heavy structural steel sections, sizable machinery on outdoor sites, and bulk materials in form weights that a lighter machine cannot handle. The Yanmar 4TNE98 diesel engine (42.1 kW, Stage IIIA/EPA Tier 3) is purpose-designed for rough terrain applications: it delivers consistent hydraulic output through sustained lift cycles without the heat management demands of a standard warehouse counterbalance engine running outside its designed environment. Pneumatic large-section tyres provide the ground contact and load distribution needed on firm outdoor surfaces — compacted gravel, hardstand aprons, and level construction pads.
Two-wheel drive is the appropriate choice when the working surface is compacted and reasonably level. On firm gravel, sealed hardstand, and well-maintained site roads, 2WD delivers the same practical capability as 4WD with simpler drivetrain maintenance. The 5T 2WD RT is not suited to loose, waterlogged, or steeply graded surfaces — those conditions call for the 4WD variant. Where the ground is firm and the load is heavy, this machine is the efficient, cost-effective option. Its 27% gradeability (laden) and 21,000 N drawbar pull give it more than adequate performance on the gradients found on typical construction sites and industrial yards around Geelong and the surrounding region.
