An articulating (knuckle) boom has multiple hinge points, letting the arm fold and bend to route the platform up, over and around obstacles - useful on sites with existing structures, trees, or awkward access. A telescopic boom extends in one straight line and typically offers greater maximum height and horizontal reach in open, unobstructed areas. If your site is clear and you mainly need height, a telescopic boom is usually the more efficient choice; if you need to navigate around something to get to your work area, a knuckle boom will serve you better.

Every boom lift has a maximum rated wind speed set by the manufacturer, shown on the machine's data plate - operation must stop once conditions exceed that rating, and higher-reach machines are generally rated for lower wind speeds than compact models.
